Vectra 3D, FirstShield Trio, and SimpleGuard 3 Information for Rabbits [Updated on: 08/27/24 04:32]
Vectra 3D, FirstShield Trio, & SimpleGuard 3 can cause serious issues with rabbits and *MUST* be used under the direct guidance from a very rabbit savvy vet!!! As with any medication you must first talk to a very rabbit savvy vet for the correct dosage for your rabbit and current situation. The information below is for reference only! The calculator will only show the dosing based on the data inputted. Talk to a very rabbit savvy vet before using Vectra 3D!

Vectra 3D is manufactured by Ceva Animal Health, LLC. Ceva writes that it will repel and kill fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, lice (biting & Sucking), mites (excluding mange mites), and biting & sand flies on dogs. There is no 'official use' for rabbits currently and it's considered an "off label" or extralabel use for a rabbit.

SimpleGuard 3 is manufactured by Summit VetPharm, LLC for Vethical, a part of VCA (Veterinary Centers of America), the largest chain of animal hospitals in the US and Canada (700+). FirstShield Trio is manufactured for Banfield Pet Hospitals. There are over 860+ Banfield Pet Hospitals across the U.S., including the ~800 located inside most PetSmarts. Both products have the same active ingredients as Vectra 3D.

NOTE: These products will not prevent Myxomatosis!! They try to protect the rabbit by killing or repelling some of the vectors that can bite the rabbit that transmit the deadly virus. Biosecurity is a must in these areas! These pages are here for reference only.

Active ingredients - Vectra 3D, FirstShield Trio, and SimpleGuard 3.

Permethrin is the key ingredient that does the repelling. It can be useful by repelling some of the insects that spread the myxomatosis virus, but it can cause chemical burns! If not dosed and applied correctly the rabbit can get chemical burns! See a rabbit savvy vet!

Dosing - There is no real protocol for dosing rabbits currently with Vectra 3D.

Department of Animal Parasitology, Veterinary Institute, Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro

This 2018 study was done on 12 Adult New Zealand rabbits (treated: n=6, control no treatment: n=6) testing the efficacy with cat fleas. Calculated ingredient dosage range using the study's numbers:

Dosing range 0.125 — 0.166 mL/kg
  Average  0.146 mL/kg
Dinotefuran   6.19  8.25mg/kg     7.22 mL/kg
Pyriproxyfen  0.55  0.73mg/kg     0.64 mL/kg
Permethrin 45.1060.13mg/kg     52.615 mL/kg

The study notes: "further studies are necessary to evaluate the safety of this formula in rabbits that undergo a superior number of repeated applications."

Adobe Pet Hospital & B.U.N.S. - Bunnies Urgently Needing Shelter

The Bunnies Urgently Needing Shelter (BUNS) rescue has the Myxomatosis virus in their area and have been using Vectra 3D for 2 years without issues. BUNS uses a dosing protocol used by Dr. Haskell & Dr. Gibbs at Adobe Pet Hospital (Santa Barbara, Ca.). They use the Vectra 3D 0.8 mL pipette from the Yellow/Gold box. Dr. Haskell & Dr. Gibbs dosing levels are just a bit higher than what the study used, but theirs are for different uses. Here is a overlap chart.

Please read their very informative page on Myxomatosis and use of Vectra 3D by Jean Silva. Please read the biosecurity section on their webpage... as it's a must in these types of areas!
