Toltrazuril is a broad-spectrum anticoccidial drug that is effective against both gamont & schizont stages of
Eimeria spp. It's used to treat coccidia in rabbits and sold as Baycox in most part of the world. Unfortunately toltrazuril is not readily available in the US. Ponazuril (toltrazuril sulfone, the alternate chemical name for ponazuril) is an active metabolite of toltrazuril and is used. Ponazuril is sold by Merial as Marquis to treat EPM in horses in the US. Note: The bioavailability of toltrazuril and ponazuril are different and must be dose and treated as different drugs!
There are a number different treatment protocols currently for rabbits both with amounts and times given. Dr. Esther van Praag of Medirabbit recommends a 9 day dosing protocol (2 days on, 5 days off, 2 days on) dosing at 15 mg/kg with toltrazuril 5% (50 mg/mL).
There are other concentrations of toltrazuril (2.5% and 10%) but 5% is most commonly used with rabbits. If you have any questions please talk to your rabbit-savvy vet! The calculator will only show the dosing based on the data inputted. Normally Toltrazuril comes in large quantities to treat animals such as horses and can be hard to find small amounts... All Things Bunnies (US) sells small amounts for rabbits, it's a 5% suspension found here.
NOTE: The suggested dose of 25 mg/kg given in some texts for toltrazuril (possibly as a mistranslation/miscalculation from 25 ppm in drinking water) is too high and has anecdotally been associated with anorexia and decreased production of faeces.
