High Dead Space Syringes (HDSS) vs Low Dead Space Syringes (LDSS) [Updated on: 09/23/24 05:08] |
High Dead Space Syringes HDSS (HDS) high dead-volume syringe |
Standard 1 mL oral syringe. This syringe is considered a High Dead Space (HDS) oral syringe. It has a larger “dead space” volume than a LDS syringe as the plunger stops at the internal shoulder between the barrel and hub. This allows a small amount of medication waste in the hub. Normally this is not an issue but in cases where very small amounts of medication is needed, it can be. The tiny bit of waste can add up to cause a large expense with costly meds. Example: When Medgene released their RHDV2 vaccine one option was a "10 Dose Bottle." Some vets reported that there was not enough vaccine for the last, 10th dose. The bottle had exactly enough liquid for 10 doses. Using a HDS syringe 9 times would cause enough hub/needle waste that there was not enough for a full 10th dose. | |
Low Dead Space Syringes LDSS (LDS) low dead-volume syringe |
1 mL oral syringe with LDS plunger. A Low Dead Space (LDS) syringe has a smaller “dead space” volume (fluid remaining within the hub) as the plunger tip extends into the hub. This allows more fluid to flow out of the syringe allowing less medication waste. |
